reative students enjoyed plenty of Art exam success this year with 80% of them gaining A* – C, which was 4% above the national average. The Art curriculum at Longhill encompasses three main areas – fine art, textiles and 3D art, all of which are very popular with students.
The small, but dedicated team, which consists of Nadja Ordynanz and Louisa Newbury is headed up by Mr Giuseppe Iozzi, who has been at Longhill for the past 20 years. “We are all very committed and passionate about our subject,” said Mr Iozzi, “And our students tend to be the same. Students who have opted for Art usually adore it and so they do really well at it. I don’t think they see it as work, although they actually do work very hard, putting in lots of extra time after school.”
Mr Iozzi went on to explain, “Basic skills are taught in the earlier years, before students have decided on their options. Once they have opted for Art, the main thrust of lessons is focused on what is most interesting and on people’s best work, rather than the exams themselves. This allows the students’ creativity and individuality to come to the fore.”
The Art department like to take students on gallery trips to enhance their knowledge, with previous outings to the Tate Galleries, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Saatchi Gallery all proving very popular. They also offer students the opportunity to take part in various workshops with organisations such as the Arts Council, Fabrica and Brighton University.
This wealth of creative opportunities seems to have paid off for Longhill’s Art students!
