Bike It Ben Visits Longhill

Posted in: News Archive

On Monday 9th November, several students from Years 7 and 8 took part in “Bike It Ben” – an initiative run by Ben Sherratt, who is the “Bike It” Officer for Brighton & Hove.

The students, mentored by Ben and Mr Riyami, worked on bikes brought in by staff to the Focus Centre.  It was a hands-on, get-your-hands-dirty session – with students working alongside Ben to clean a replace bike chains, remove brake cables and pump up tyres!

Ben was impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the boys and girls and by their desire to learn more about bikes and how to maintain them.  As a result, Ben has asked for a group of Longhill students to accompany him to his next Bike It session at Downs View School in Woodingdean.  Downs View is a school which provides specialist education for children and young people aged from 4 to 16 years with learning difficulties.

Mr Riyami explained, “The morning will be spent repairing and maintaining bikes, along with teaching the Downs View students what we have learnt and how to maintain their own bikes in the future.”

“It’s a great opportunity for the students selected to attend the morning at Downs View to pass on their knowledge to other students”, he added, “and I’m extremely pleased with how enthusiastically Longhill students have participated in this project.”
