Longhill Peer Mentors Make a Noise for Anti-Bullying Week

Posted in: News Archive

Students and staff are actively supporting this year’s Anti-Bullying Week, beginning on 16 November, with the theme of Make a Noise, which aims to encourage young people to speak out and seek help if they are being bullied.

Inclusion Learning Mentor, Jill Robson, runs The Peer Mentoring Programme at Longhill – a scheme which supports new and potentially vulnerable, students when they join the school.  Meetings take place between student and mentor on a weekly basis and continue for as long as the student needs them.

Peer mentors are recruited and begin their training whilst in Year 8 and are fully trained and ready to take on their mentees by the start of Year 9.  Training is primarily undertaken by previous peer mentors, resulting in a user-led programme which is run by the students for the students. As part of the training process, the peer mentors spend considerable time during the summer term with year 6 students before they join the school.

During Anti-Bullying Week, the current peer mentors will be delivering anti-bullying workshops to Year 7 students in school; the workshops will concentrate on the issue of cyber bullying and on-line safetyIn addition, a group of 10 students will be attending a special screening at the Odeon in Brighton of “The Duff”, a film focusing on cyber-bullying. The film will be followed by a discussion on how to create a whole school approach to bullying.  This event is run by award-winning, Brighton-based charity, Ditch the Label http://www.ditchthelabel.org/

Longhill students will also be attending the flagship event of UK anti-racism charity Show Racism the Red Card at the Amex Stadium.  The event, which aims to promote positivity in sport, promises to be a valuable and worthwhile experience for Longhill students to enjoy and share with their fellow students when they get back to school.
