Longhill Loves Reading!

Posted in: News Archive

To celebrate Longhill’s Book Week, Year 7 students had the chance to come to school dressed as their favourite literary character.

Students used lots of imagination when deciding on their characters and it was no easy task to choose a prize winner.  Eventually, it was decided that Lila should win the prize of an Amazon book voucher for her Mary Poppins costume. Members of the English department also joined the students in dressing as book characters.

Ms Bradley, Assistant Headteacher in charge of Literacy, said, “It was wonderful to discuss the characters we were dressed as with students from all year groups and the Year 7 students did us proud. ” Well done to all students who took part!

Also during Book Week, the award winning children’s author Alan Gibbons came to Longhill to work with students from across all year groups. He read aloud from his new novel in Year 7 mentor time, gave a talk to the whole of Year 8 and ran specialist writing workshops for students across the school.  In his workshops, Alan Gibbons co-wrote a piece of creative prose with students before they attempted their own pieces. The students were very excited to have worked with a famous author, “It was really cool to meet a real author” said one Year 8 student. “I was surprised that a writer could be that funny,” said another after the author kept the whole of Year 8 captivated in an assembly about his work. The visit was particularly exciting for Year 8 students who have been studying his novel ‘The Edge’ in this term’s English lessons.

All in all, Longhill’s Book Week was a literary triumph!
