Year 8s Impress at Amazon Summit

Posted in: Latest News

9 of our Year 8 students who have been part of the Amazon Get IT project attended the AWS Summit on Wednesday 8th May at the ExCel Centre London. The students were selected due to their commitment and dedication shown throughout the project in which they worked in teams to create a problem-solving community based app.

Upon arrival, they joined students from 10 other schools at this international conference which attracts over 12,000 industry representatives.

They were introduced to the Amazon Summarian Console, an app that allows users to build virtual and augmented reality environments and hosts. Working as a team they used this technology to plan and build a sustainable and future-proof city.

After lunch, they presented a poster and 30 second advert for their city “Ecoast”. The students were excited to have the opportunity to work with such innovative technology and specialist advisors from AWS.

The day ended with presentations from top two teams nationwide. The winners were announced and their idea “Connect Hearo” – an app to enable hearing impaired students better access to lessons – will be developed by AWS.

Team ‘Theco’ from Longhill were successful in setting up a networking opportunity with an engagement manager from AWS. Our student Reem said that “we would like to further refine and develop our app to get it made in the future.”

The Amazon Get IT project has been an amazing opportunity for our students. It has particularly inspired girls to consider a career in the STEM industry and raised the aspirations of our Year 8 students! Well done to everyone involved!
