Headteachers letter
Dear Parents/Carers

Our new year is now firmly underway with the school community back and working hard.

Our support of our Year 11 and Year 10 students has moved provision towards a much more flexible approach.

As a result of higher levels of quality assured assessments the school is more able to provide an individualised approach towards student’s study. We have focused areas of study and created additional curriculum time for students who need this support in different subjects.

This more flexible and individualised approach is having a very positive impact upon progress.

Building capacity through additional staffing, modifying teaching groups and sets, increasing assessment of progress and ensuring the reduction of shared classes at KS3 resulted recently in a new timetable being issued.

These strategies to increase the quality of our provision and support progress has had a positive impact upon the school and our ethos of developing independent learning skills.

I believe we will make significant progress this year towards our targets in September 2012 at GCSE.

Our commitment towards the well being and achievement of our young people is shared and their response as always is a very positive one.

Your support of the school is a key element and as ever an exceptionally positive contribution towards our shared goals.

We are delaying our Year 9 Options process as we await central Government announcements regarding the curriculum. We will be able to announce how this will effect the KS4 curriculum offer shortly. Please keep an eye on the website where the new dates will be provided.

The school is reaching further back to identify students who need additional focus and support for their studies in Year 10. We intend to have a focused evening on 2nd February where we hope to meet with the students and their families to identify strategies to support their progress at this early stage in KS4.

Looking towards September 2012 the school is considering a greater focus at KS3 towards Literacy and Numeracy development. I would be grateful to hear any views from parents regarding these two specific areas.

As outlined at the start of the year my expectations towards the setting and assessment of homework is for this to be more effective, supported through our new systems of monitoring. Home study is a key element to develop independent learning skills and again I thank your for your support in this area. If you still have issues regarding the setting of homework please contact the mentor or subject teachers directly.

Last term was a very challenging one for the school but I am confident that 2012 will be our best yet. Thank you for your confidence and continued support.

Yours sincerely
