Letter sent to all Year 9 students about a trip to the Christmas Markets in Lille 19 October 2007

The Foreign Languages Department are organising a day-trip to the Christmas market in Lille to take place on Friday 7 December. Lille is a vibrant cultural centre, capital of the Pas de Calais region and is particularly attractive in the Christmas season because of its lively market. As well as the market, with stalls from different countries in Europe, there are many pedestrianised streets full of atmosphere and interest with ample shopping opportunities.
The trip is for Year 9 students and will have a positive linguistic content. Students will be coached in realistic language to use in the town. There will also be a French based activity to do while exploring Lille which was Cultural Capital of Europe in 2004. Giving the students the opportunity to practise French in the real setting of a French town will be a valuable motivating force for learning.
The coach will be leaving from school at 5.40am on Friday 7 December and will be travelling to France via the Tunnel, returning to Longhill at 10.00pm. The cost is £47 per student.
Letters are being given out to all Year 9 students but places will have to be allocated on a lottery system by drawing students’ names out of a ‘hat’. All Year 9 students are eligible to go on the visit, but students whose behaviour has caused reason for concern, may not be allowed to go. This will be discussed with the Head of House. We have explained the situation to the students and ask for parents’ understanding on this matter. If you would like your son/daughter to be considered for this trip could you please sign the consent form below and return it to the Cashier’s Office on Monday 29October. Please do not send any monies until you know whether your son/daughter has a place, when further details will be given.
