Year 10 GCSE History Conference

Letter sent out to all parents of Year 10 and 11 History GCSE students,

January 2008

Dear Parents/Guardians

The History Department is inviting your son/daughter to attend a GCSE History Conference to be held on Monday 11 February at 9.45.

The conference consists of two sessions: an ‘exam-busting’ workshop led by GCSE Chief Examiners and ‘Hitler on Trial’ is a play which covers several key areas of the Weimar & Nazi Germany study topic in GCSE history. This is a core part of the curriculum and candidates must answer a question on this in the summer exam. Students will be expected to participate in the conference and to produce academic work.  They must remember to bring pens and pencils with them.

The conference is to be held at The Hazlitt Theatre, Maidstone.  The coach will leave school at 7.45am and return to school at approx 2.15pm.  School Uniform must be worn and a packed lunch is necessary.  We require a voluntary contribution of £24.50 to cover the costs of the trip which includes theatre ticket, exam busting workbooks and the coach.  Should insufficient contributions be forthcoming the trip may not take place.  Please make cheques payable to Longhill School with your son/daughter’s name, mentor group and Year 10 History Conference written on the back.  Students must hand in payment to the Cashier’s Office.  Unfortunately payment will not be refundable unless there is sufficient time to fill the place as the school has already paid for the tickets in advance.

The department is lucky to have obtained 45 tickets but places are limited.  Students will need to hand in the proforma and payment promptly as places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Student behaviour and attitude in lessons, however, will be considered and students whose behaviour has caused reason for concern may not be permitted to go.

We have been attending this conference for a number of years and find that it gives students a real boost with their exam technique and understanding of Weimar & Nazi Germany.  I hope your son/daughter will make the most of this opportunity.

Yours sincerely

G Calvert
Head of History Department
